This is not the view from my kitchen sink. This is the Rothko Chapel in Houston, and I think of it as the front door to my life. Many years ago amid a busy, restless stretch of my working life in Houston, I would often end up here. Like every peace seeker before and since, I’d come in, sit down and make myself at home in the deep, cool quiet.
May is a month of homecomings for all of us. Children coming home from school, families going home for the summer, and me at home wherever I go. If you’re anywhere under the wide Texas sky, let yourself into the Rothko Chapel for an intimate reunion with yourself. I’ll be sitting right beside you.
