Peek inside my medicine chest

September 18th, 2009

It’s the time to reach for a tonic.

For fatigue: Be tired.
For impatience: Be still.
For inflammation: Chill.
For despair: Empty completely.
For fear of getting nothing done: Get nothing done.
For having no time: Take time.
For lack of love: Love.
For disappointment: Dance.
For inadequacy: Give.
For no reason: Be unreasonable.
For others, pray.

For these and all other symptoms, exhale.

  3. Just what I needed to read. Thank you.Today I've given myself (and my daughter) a 'mental health' day. This post convinces me I've done the right thing.

  4. With kids home from school sick most of this week and my getting nothing done and now being sick too, this is a good prescription. Now if I can just remember to take the medicine!

  5. For lack of love: love. Why is that so hard, at least when it comes to relationships with men named Ned?

Thanks for this. Just what the doctor ordered. And I can increase my dosage any time I want.

  19. I am so very grateful for this. This truly warmed my heart the morning after you wrote it. I'm still re-reading it and posted it on my fridge. I really needed this during the past hectic week with the first true sickness of my favorite tiny little man.

  21. I walked on the beach today instead of trying to write what would not yet be written. I walked and made friends with the Oyster Catchers, the waves and my own shadow. I walked and thought of you and the way you choose only the words that are needed to say only what is worth saying. I walked and was reminded why I write and why I sit.

  22. Thank you Marianne, that is very meaningful to me. Walking is the best way to write. It puts everything in motion.

  23. Your newsletter is hitting me right where it counts today … but in a good way. Been sitting here at the computer feeling embattled and exhausted and completely nob-productive. After reading your sage advice, I'm prescribing myself a nap before my daughter comes home so that I can start fresh this evening.
    Thanks. I needed that! 🙂

  24. I shared this with my little family at dinner. Yes we actually sat down for dinner. How funny when I got to the part "my husband, my kid, my dog". Thats exactly the order they were sitting in, and when I looked at the three of them, I realized I am the luckiest person in the world. Our happiness lives in the space that our arms can reach. I remember this Karen, from the first time I met you. I carry so many of your wisdoms with me. Such as BREATHE. Breath is life. Thank you.

  25. Having been sick for the past two weeks I needed to read this post. I was feeling overwhelmed at all that hadn't happened while laid up in bed. I exhaled and realised all was well exactly how it was, my home, my family, even me. Thanks.
