how to raise a Buddhist child

July 11th, 2011

When someone borrowed my post on teachable moments last week they referred to this as a blog on “Buddhist parenting.” I hadn’t thought about that for awhile, so it seems a good time to share these tips on raising a Buddhist child.

1. Honestly, have no idea.
2. Diligently, make no effort.
3. Faithfully, accept what is.
4. Sincerely, pay attention.
5. Be kind.
6. Otherwise, apologize.
7. Raise a Buddhist parent instead.

  4. Methinks this is how all children, not just Buddhist children, should be raised … imagine what the world would be like ….

  6. While I continue to examine this advice, my teacher told me to NEVER impose dharma or dharma practice on my children. If they are interested, they will find their own way to it. I have made myself available to advise and instruct them in dharma, but that is all.
OTOH, my Catholic wife and the Catholic church do not have similar views on imposing their own doctrines, so at the moment I have two Catholic sons. We’ll see how the indoctrination process holds up over time.
